DDSL Under 11 Lee Kavanagh Cup Final – Loreto Park 21-06-2019

Raheny United v Peamount United

Last Friday evening saw the meeting of two quality teams as Raheny took on Peamount in the final of the Lee Kavanagh Cup. Raheny arrived into the tournament in a rich vein of form having received the Team of The Tournament the previous weekend in their first taste of European football at the Moorlands Festival of Football in Scotland. However, it was clear from the start that Peamount were not going to be an easy opponent as Raheny found themselves under some early pressure. However, as has been the case all season the Raheny centre back pairing of Zach Donegan and Darragh Geraghty were in fine form and dealt admirably with any threats that came their way. Geraghty and Donegan once again proving to be the rock that this team are built on.

After absorbing this early pressure Raheny began to settle with the midfield beginning to get hold of the game. Darragh Heffernan began to pull the strings in the middle of the park that allowed Killian Richmond and David Reddy to show their talent on the flanks. Eventually the pressure told when Raheny were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box. Up stood Reddy who curled a dipping shot into the top corner. Raheny continued to probe after this with Cian Hartery and Calum Sherwin causing a lot of problems and just before the half time whistle Rory McDermott who was leading the line valiantly got rewarded with a delicate chip over the Peamount keeper to send Raheny in to the break two goals to the good.

The start of the second half belonged to Peamount though, they stood up to the challenge and began to ask serious questions of Raheny. Attack after attack was coming from this young Peamount side but Rhys Comiskey who was in goal for Raheny began to show why he is such a highly rated keeper pulling off a number of fine saves and keeping the slate clean for Raheny. As Peamount began to push though, one could see that Raheny felt there was opportunities on the break with the pace they have through the side. Harry Duffitt who was now leading the line came close on a number of occasions with his probing runs behind the Peamount defence and in the 40th minute Rory McDermott added his second with a cool finish into the bottom corner. Peamount fought right to the end but it was to be Raheny’s time and just before the final whistle the tie was put to bed when Killian Richmond broke down the right and then pulled a clever pass back to David Reddy who rifled his finish into the bottom corner. This was to be the last action of the night to leave Raheny with a 4 nil win which although a deserved win was also a somewhat flattering scoreline.

Well done to all the players and coaches on what has been a fantastic season. Special thanks also to our team sponsor, Mr. Gary Wedick of Grange Road Motors who very generously sponsored a full set of tracksuits and travel tops for the team.
